When many people think of Greece, they think of the Greek Islands. They have a vision of picturesque beaches, white washed houses and no one around. They then plan a dream vacation to Mykinos, Santorini and Kos thinking that they are the only people there, they will meet nothing but friendly Greeks, that it is inexpensive and the islands are unexplored. Unfortunately, there are a million other people that have these same dreams.

The Greek islands were discovered in the 70's by tourists and people have been visiting them ever since. However, they are all still quite beautiful and each one is quite distinctive. Depending on what island you visit you can end up in an expensive tourist packed resort or a beautiful, scenic island with nothing but Greeks. It's a tossup. As mentioned above, the tourists head towards the most talked about, most photographed and most visited islands and wonder why its not what the expected. Well the islands of these people do exist. You just have to find it.

I have attempted to do two things in this photo gallery. First, I have tried to capture the unexplored islands (My cousin asked me why since it will send tourists there). To show people the hidden part of the Greek Islands. The islands that retain much of the original beauty and heritage. I have also sought out the hidden side of the tourist islands. Many people never get past the crows on the beach. I have tried to capture the part of the islands that are beautiful and what made them so popular to begin with.

I have divided the islands by geographical groups. Because the groups are in the region, the share much in common in terms of geography and history and I will discuss the individual aspects on each group pages. The Ionian Islands are the islands on western side of Greece and least explored by tourists. The Argosaronic Islandsare hidden in-between Attica (the finger of the mainland that Athens is located in) and the Peloponnese and are home to many vacationing Greeks. The Aegean Islands are the largest group and most well known. I have further broken those down by area. Please be sure to view my descriptions of the groups as well as the islands.
