Asklepios Info Sanctuary Photos, Part 1
Welcome to part two of my photos from Epidavros. These are pictures of the Sanctuary of Asklepios. Asklepios is the god of medicine and healing. People who were sick or ill often went to his sanctuaries for healing by his priests. After purification the "patient" would spend a night in the dormitory and either be cured or the priests would have a vision of how to treat the patient. This would often be a combination of rest, physical and intellectual activates as well as herbs. This explains why the site as a gymnasium and an amphitheater (see part one) I am guessing that the priests had an idea of what worked for various symptoms and used it on all like patients.
The Epidauros sanctuary was one of the two most important sanctuaries for Asklepios. The body of Asklepios was said to be buried here (Before Apollo made him immortal). His primary sanctuary was at the island of Kos. Other sanctuaries were located in Athens at the base of the acropolis and on Crete . There is not much left of the sanctuary at Epidauros. The Romans praticed a more logical form of medicine and the early Christians heavily discouraged his cult. Eventually they built a churches over his sanctuaries.
